************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the second public lecture for this year on July 6 (Saturday) at City University of Hong Kong on the theme of Confucianism.

The RGC has invited Professor of the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Chan, and Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr Lo Ming-tung, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 10am to 12 noon
Venue: Chan Kei Biu Lecture Hall (LT-6), City University of Hong Kong
Language: Cantonese
Free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Professor Chan will give a talk titled "Confucian Political Philosophy: A Reconstruction for Modern Times". Professor Chan will share with the audience how he blends Confucian political thought with liberal democratic institutions to form a new Confucian political philosophy. He will also explore the implications of this new, yet traditional, political philosophy on fundamental issues of modern politics.

Dr Lo will deliver a lecture titled "From Central Institution to Regional Indoctrination: The Interplay between Ritual Policies and Cultural Assimilation in the Didactic Transformation of Ancient Chinese Etiquette in the Chosun Dynasty of Korea from the 15th and 16th Century". The lecture will cover the findings on how the central government of the Chosun Dynasty constructed and adjusted its policies in collaboration with Confucian scholars to meet the target of regional indoctrination.

Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited to deliver public lectures organised by the RGC. These lectures aim at arousing the public's interest in local research development.
