Mongol musicians evoke grassland home
*************************************

Ethnic Mongolians who were born and raised in nomad families make up the Horqin Ensemble of Inner Mongolia. Their grassland home is known as the Land of Folksongs. Each ensemble member is able to sing while playing instruments. They have also acquired the unique Mongolian throat-singing style known as "khoomi", in which they can emit two notes at the same time.

The ensemble's love of music and their homeland is trumpeted in their performance. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department recently invited them to perform in Hong Kong. They shared their experience with local students who were enchanted by the unusual sounds the singers, and their fanciful instruments, evoked.

The story appears today (June 2) in news.gov.hk in both text and video format.
