The 4th Hong Kong Games (HKG), one of the highlight events of the city-wide "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, concluded successfully today (June 2) after a series of exhilarating contests.
The 4th HKG was held from April 27 to June 2, attracting some 3 100 athletes from 18 districts to strive for honours in more than 1 000 contests in eight sports - athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
Speaking at the HKG's closing-cum-prize presentation ceremony held at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre this afternoon, the Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, said the effort of promoting "Sport for All" would not stop after the conclusion of the games.
Through the HKG and the concerted efforts of various sectors of the community, she believed the vitality and positive energy fostered by the games would continue, making Hong Kong a healthier and happier place to live.
Also officiating at the ceremony were legislative councillor, Mr Ip Kwok-him; Chairman of the 4th HKG Organising Committee, Mr William Tong; Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung; Honorary Secretary General of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Mr Pang Chung; and the Executive Adviser of 4th HKG Organising Committee, Mr Chau How-chen.
At today's ceremony, the hard work of the winning athletes and teams was rewarded. The 4th HKG overall championship title went to Yuen Long District, which amassed the highest total score of all eight sporting events. Eastern District won the overall first runner-up, while Kowloon City District won the overall second runner-up.
The overall champions for each of the eight sporting events were also announced: Yuen Long (athletics), Yuen Long (badminton), Central & Western (basketball), Yuen Long (futsal), Sha Tin (swimming), Kowloon City (table tennis), Yuen Long (tennis), and Yuen Long (volleyball).
In addition, prizes to encourage district participation were awarded to the winning districts. They were: Yuen Long (District with the most gold medals), Yuen Long and Sham Shui Po (District with the best progress), Yuen Long (District with the greatest participation ), Kowloon City (District with the strongest cheering squad).
More than 400 000 people took part in various community involvement activities held during the games period - the opening ceremony, cheering team competition, photo contest, voting and guessing activities and more. Winners or winning teams for some of these activities were announced at today's ceremony.
In the "Cheering Team Competition for 18 Districts", the winners were Yuen Long District (Best Performance Award), Islands District (Best Local Characteristics Award), and Wong Tai Sin District (Highest Popularity Awards).
For the "Voting for My Favourite Sporty District" activity, Central & Western District and Sai Kung District were voted as the favourite sporty districts online and by ballot respectively. The "Guessing of the Overall Champion of the 4th HKG" activity drew the participation of 190 000 people. Winners of both activities were drawn after the ceremony today and the winner list will be uploaded to the 4th HKG webpage (www.hongkonggames.hk) and published in Sing Tao Daily and The Standard on June 11.
The submission deadline for the "Dynamic Moments Photo Contest" is June 10 before 6pm. Winning entries will be announced on July 10 and a series of roving exhibitions of the winning entries will be be staged at Leisure and Cultural Services Department venues in the 18 districts from mid July to September.
Representatives of the 18 District Councils and the principal contributor of the 4th HKG, Hong Kong Jockey Club, also attended the ceremony today.
