*********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on Home-School Co-operation:

The Committee on Home-School Co-operation (CHSC)'s efforts over the past two decades in providing a useful platform for communication and fostering closer ties between parents and schools have borne fruit, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, said today (June 1).

Addressing the CHSC's 20th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony cum Home-School Co-operation Ambassador Certificate Presentation Ceremony, Mrs Lam noted that the theme of today's event was "two decades of home-school co-operation, love and care for all".

Mrs Lam said that the theme, emphasising the importance of love and care, was also in line with the spirit of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, which aims at injecting positive energy into society, fostering social cohesion and promoting care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

She believed that over the past 20 years, principals, teachers and parents had taken an active part in promoting home-school co-operation and had taught their students and children the importance of caring for others and mutual help, thereby nurturing their sense of compassion, respect for others and the can-do spirit of Hong Kong.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Education Commission, Dr Moses Cheng, said home-school co-operation should begin at kindergartens to help toddlers grow up healthily.

The CHSC chairman, Dr Gordon Tsui, said he believed that home-school co-operation based on mutual trust and understanding can help the next generation become responsible citizens with compassion and civic awareness.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony were the Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, and the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs Cherry Tse. About 1,800 parents and teachers from schools and Federations of Parent-Teacher Associations took part in the ceremony. The ceremony was also one of the "Caring Hong Kong" events under the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign.

Today's ceremony also featured the launching of the "See me fly" and "I did it" award schemes of the CHSC to commend outstanding achievements of primary and secondary students. The "See me fly" scheme is jointly organised with Lions District 303, with Federations of Parent-Teacher Associations of 18 Districts as the supporting organisations, while the "I did it" scheme is supported by Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Home-School Co-operation Ambassadors were also presented with certificates for their contributions on home-school co-operation in the ceremony.
