****************************************************

The Statistics Advisory Board held a meeting today (May 31) to discuss official statistics work and its recent developments.

At the meeting, Members were informed of the latest progress of the planning of the 2013 World Statistics Congress (WSC) to be held in Hong Kong in August 2013.

The Commissioner for Census and Statistics and Chairperson of the Statistics Advisory Board, Mrs Lily Ou-yang, said, "This biennial Congress serves as a valuable networking platform for statistical practitioners across a wide spectrum of disciplines to share experiences, insights and expertise in various statistical fronts.  Various areas of preparatory work related to the hosting of the 2013 WSC are now in full swing.  We hope that the Congress will further promote global statistical development."

Members were informed of plans of the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) to further strengthen and enhance its data quality assurance system and fieldwork management system.  They were consulted on the strategies, direction and proposed action plan of these initiatives.

Also reported at the meeting were the key data relating to Hong Kong residents residing in Mainland China based on data sourced from the 2010 Population Census of the Mainland.

The Board discussed other major statistical developments since the previous meeting, including professional assistance being rendered by C&SD in conducting the Manpower Projections exercise and in analysing the poverty situation, and the release of the updated set of labour force projections and domestic household projections of Hong Kong.

The Statistics Advisory Board is a non-statutory advisory body which advises the Commissioner for Census and Statistics on matters pertaining to government statistical work.  Its membership consists of established professionals of the business sector, academia and the community, which provides for a wide representation to assist the Commissioner in integrating views of data users, data suppliers and statisticians.  The terms of reference and composition of the Board can be found on the C&SD website (www.censtatd.gov.hk/about_us/our_advisory_board/index.jsp).
