The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (May 27) led more than 30,000 construction workers to do morning exercises and pledge to work together to achieve the goal of zero accidents on construction sites. The activity also launched Construction Safety Week 2013.

Jointly organised by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, the Zero Accident Declaration Ceremony took place at the Kai Tak Development (KTD) area today. With "Working Together Towards One Goal for You and Your Families: Zero Accidents" as the slogan, the event aimed to encourage workers to stay vigilant at work, take adequate safety precautions and provide support to their colleagues in order to achieve a zero-accident site environment and return home safely and happily every day.

The event received an overwhelming response from the construction industry with a record number of participants. More than 500 construction workers attended the ceremony at the KTD area, and 30,000 workers from some 800 construction sites in the territory participated through Internet live video transmission.

Officiating at the ceremony, the Chief Executive, together with the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, and the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see, appealed to stakeholders to commit to providing a safe working environment for construction workers and fostering a culture of site safety.

Construction Safety Week aims to promote an accident-free site environment and a caring culture in the construction industry. Launched last year, the campaign has received support from the industry including employers, professional institutions, trade associations and labour unions.

The campaign is being held from today to May 31. In addition to the Zero Accident Declaration Ceremony, the activities include a safety conference, visits to construction sites with exemplary safety performance, and the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme 2012 Award Presentation Ceremony.
