Free rides and free check-ups to promote community care in support of "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign from May 27 to June 2 (with photos)

     Everyone in Hong Kong - visitors and locals alike - will be able to enjoy free tram and ferry rides on the HKGCC Free Ride Day, a highlight event supporting the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign this week.

     The Free Ride Day will fall on May 29, when the public can enjoy free tram rides on Hong Kong Island as well as free rides on two ferry routes running between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central and between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai.

     The day is devoted to promoting a caring community and is part of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce's 152nd anniversary celebrations.

     Activities organised for Family Health Month 2013 will run from June 1 to 15 at the Hospital Authority Building, where Health Talks, in Cantonese only, have been scheduled for June 1 and 15.

     The topics of the talks will cover a wide range of health issues including "How Pollution Can Affect Your Health", "Allergic Rhinitis or Asthma", "Eating Disorders", "How to Use Chinese and Western Medicines to Control Body Weight", "Hyperactive Children", "Drug Abuse Among Young People" and "How to Handle Stress and Anxiety".

     People who attend the Health Talks will have the chance to win free check-ups, as lucky draws will be held at the end of each talk. The prizes are free bone density X-ray tests, gynaecology tests and Chinese medical body check-ups.

     The Social Inclusion Community Arts Project will hold its closing ceremony with a carnival on June 1 at the Discovery Park Shopping Centre in Tsuen Wan. The project's aim is to acquaint the public with the arts and cultures of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

     The ceremony will open with a fashion show featuring designs by ethnic minority designers, followed by songs and dances, theatrical sketches, and a performance by local pop group Super Girls.

     The Hong Kong Jockey Club, a partner organisation of the Campaign, will stage the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Cup at the Sha Tin Racecourse on June 2.

     Four title races carrying the Campaign's supporting themes will also be held: the Vibrant Hong Kong Handicap, the Hip Hong Kong Handicap, the Caring Hong Kong Handicap and the Fresh Hong Kong Handicap.

     The Sha Tin Choir will open the Cup race by singing the Campaign theme song "Sail On". The Announcement in the Public Interest of the theme song will also be broadcast at the racecourse.

     More than 30 events will be running concurrently this week to support the Campaign. Two events will be held on June 1 in Tin Shui Wai: the final for the Tomorrow Star Singing Contest will be held at Tin Fai Road Community Hall while the International Children's Day Carnival will be held in Tin Ching Community Hall.

     Also on June 1, volunteers will join the Rice Dumplings Giving Day in Tai Po and deliver rice dumplings to the elderly and families in need so as to liven up the festive spirit for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival. The Mui Wo Dragon Boat Race 2013 will be held at Silver Mine Bay Beach on Lantau Island on June 2.

     These events all support the "Hong Kong: Our Home" public participation campaign, which aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

     The Campaign provides a platform to enhance the publicity of events and activities that engage a wide cross-section of the community and showcase Hong Kong as a liveable and enjoyable city, giving residents a greater sense of pride in their home and a stronger sense of belonging.
