QMH announces an incident
*************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) made the following announcement today (May 22):

A 58-year-old female patient with critical end-stage heart failure underwent an emergency heart transplantation at QMH yesterday (May 21). After the operation, it was found that the blood type of the patient (A) was not matched with the donor (AB). The patient is now in serious condition and she is staying in Intensive Care Unit for post-operation observation. Necessary treatment is given to the patient to minimise the chance of rejection.

The Hospital gave a full account of the incident to the relatives of the patient and deeply apologised last night. Furthermore, the Hospital also expressed deep apology to the relatives of the donor for not making best use of the donated organ.

The Hospital has reported the incident to the Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advanced Incident Reporting System. Thorough investigation will be carried out by the Hospital.
