The following is issued on behalf of the Honourable Acting Chief Justice, Mr Patrick Chan, today (May 22):
"I was greatly saddened to learn that Sir Denys Roberts has passed away in the United Kingdom. The news of his death has been received by all in the Judiciary with great sorrow.
"Sir Denys had an illustrious public service, as the Attorney General of Hong Kong from 1966 to 1973, the Chief Secretary (formerly Colonial Secretary) from 1973 to 1979 and the Chief Justice from 1979 to 1988. He was a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal from 1997 to 2003.
"On behalf of the Judiciary, I will be conveying our condolences to his family."
