Correctional Services officers stopped an inmate from self-harm at Stanley Prison today (May 18).
At about 9.25am, an officer found the 65-year-old male inmate cutting his neck with a pair of small scissors inside the toilet of a workshop. The officer immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement.
The inmate sustained cut wounds at his neck and was conscious at the time. The institution's medical officer gave treatment to the inmate who was later transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment. The clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The inmate was convicted for offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs.
