Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Tuen Mun Hospital

     The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the earlier confirmation that some in-patients confirmed to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital made the following update today (May 18):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Three more male patients aged from 60 to 69 have been confirmed as VRE carrier during contact tracing. They did not have related clinical symptoms, while one patient passed away due to underlying medical illness.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. Admission to the related wards has been suspended.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
