May 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 15) the May 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by Hong Kong Residents, 2000 to 2012", "The Cultural and Creative Industries in Hong Kong, 2011" and "The Movement of the Unemployment Rate in 2012" are included.

"Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by Hong Kong Residents, 2000 to 2012"

     To have a better understanding of the latest development of information technology (IT) in the community, C&SD has been conducting the Thematic Household Survey on IT Usage and Penetration regularly since 2000. This feature article describes the usage of personal computers and Internet services by the Hong Kong residents from 2000 to 2012. The survey results provide useful reference in the development of IT strategy in Hong Kong.

"The Cultural and Creative Industries in Hong Kong, 2011"

     The cultural and creative industries (CCI) are among the most dynamic sectors in Hong Kong, contributing to economic growth and job creation. CCI comprise a set of knowledge-based activities that deploy creativity and intellectual capital as primary inputs and deliver goods and services with cultural, artistic and creative content. This feature article gives the latest economic situation of CCI in Hong Kong.

"The Movement of the Unemployment Rate in 2012"

     Labour market conditions, having staged a gradual turnaround in the second half of 2009, witnessed widespread and notable improvements over the course of 2010 and 2011. The labour market remained generally tight in 2012. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 3.4% in January - March 2012 to 3.2% in March - May 2012 and varied from 3.2% to 3.4% in the remaining period of 2012. The corresponding figure for October - December 2012 was 3.3%. This feature article provides an analysis of the changes in unemployment rate in 2012 from various perspectives. It aims to give readers a better understanding about the recent unemployment situation in Hong Kong.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
