LegCo Panel on Environmental Affairs visits waste management facilities (with photos)

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Environmental Affairs (Panel) visited the waste management facilities in Tuen Mun and Tseung Kwan O today (May 11) to understand the operation of the facilities.

     Members of the Panel, accompanied by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, first visited the Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Recycle Centre at Tsing Hoi Circuit, Tuen Mun, which is operated by New Opportunity Limited with funding support from the Environment and Conservation Fund. They received a briefing on the role and operation of the recycling centre. The centre mainly collected waste plastic and glass bottles for recycling from residential and commercial sectors in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long. They then went to the EcoPark in Tuen Mun Area 38 and visited the tenants engaging in recycling of waste plastic, waste electrical appliances and computer equipment as well as waste cooking oil and got to know their operation.

     Members also visited the restored Tseung Kwan O Stage I Landfill and received a briefing on landfill restoration and afteruse. They observed the pet garden (under construction), cycle tracks and Tseung Kwan O Stage I Landfill large platform being built on the restored landfill. Members also toured the South East New Territories Landfill to get to know the operation of the landfill.

     Members participating the site visit included Chairman of the Panel Ms Cyd Ho, Panel Members Mr Chan Kin-por, Mr Steven Ho, Mr Gary Fan, Mr Kwok Wai-keung, Dr Helena Wong, Dr Elizabeth Quat, Mr Tony Tse, Dr Lam Tai-fai, and Non-Panel Member Mr Paul Tse.
