Correctional officers rescued a remand inmate who attempted to hang himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (May 8).
During patrol at about 8.35pm, an officer noticed that the 30-year-old male remand inmate was trying to hang himself by tying a loop made with bed sheet onto the grill gate inside his cell. The officer immediately asked the inmate to stop and called for reinforcements.
Upon arrival, reinforcement staff immediately entered the cell and released him from the loop. He was conscious at the time. The officers sent him to the centre hospital for medical treatment, and subsequently transferred him to a public hospital for further treatment. Clinical psychologist will follow up the case.
A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The inmate was remanded to the centre for offence of robbery.
