The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) smashed an unlicensed cold store in Sheung Shui today (May 7).

Based on intelligence and following prolonged surveillance, FEHD officers raided a cargo handling compound run by a logistics company in Ho Sheung Heung at about 1.30am and found the unlicensed cold store.

During the operation, large quantities of chilled food items including meat with accompanying official health certificates and vegetables kept under refrigeration were found on the premises.

A 34-year-old man is assisting in the investigation.

Under the Food Business Regulation, the maximum penalty for operating an unlicensed cold store is six months' imprisonment and a $50,000 fine.

"We will continue our stringent enforcement action against unlicensed food business to safeguard food safety and public health," an FEHD spokesman said.
