Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the confirmation earlier that there were in-patients found to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (May 2):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. A female patient aged 98 has been confirmed as VRE carrier during contact tracing, without clinical symptoms. She passed away due to underlying illness on May 1. On the other hand, a 58-year-old male patient who had earlier been announced as confirmed VRE infected case after investigation passed away due to his own illness.  

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
