The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will give two concerts in May featuring Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Also performing at the concerts will be three young musicians - guest conductor and pianist Lio Kuokman, violinist Lam Che Ho and cellist Letty Poon.
Under the leadership of music director Dr Yip Wai-hong, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and the young musicians will perform a delightful programme that will include Beethoven's "Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C, Op. 56", Wagner's "Prelude" and "Liebestod" from "Tristan und Isolde" and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" Overture.
Praised by the "Philadelphia Inquirer" as "a startling conducting talent", Lio Kuokman has conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra, Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Lio's passion for education has led him to work as Apprentice Conductor of the New York Youth Symphony, Assistant Conductor of the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony, Music Director of the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, and Guest Conductor of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Orchestra. As a concert pianist, Lio has performed as soloist with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Romania Bacau Philharmonic and China National Symphony. He has also performed as harpsichordist with members of Les Arts Florissants in New York. As a dedicated chamber musician, he is a founding member and the President of the Macau Chamber Music Association. Lio has been the recipient of numerous awards, including first prize in the First Toyama Piano Competition in Hong Kong, top prize in the Sixth Mauro Paolo Monopoli International Piano Competition in Italy, and the Theodore Presser Foundation Award for Young Conductors.
Aged 21, Lam Che Ho was praised as "a young concert artist with flair and musical integrity" by "The Audiotechnique". Lam was chosen as first violinist of the Eastman String Quartet by the Joint Congressional Committee and the Eastman School of Music to perform at the 2013 United States Presidential Inauguration Luncheon in Washington D.C. for President Barack Obama.
Letty Poon, is a sought-after cellist for solo, chamber and orchestral performances with groups such as the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Theatre du Pif and Musica Viva. Poon has performed in Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Italy, France and Austria. She has participated in the Pacific Music Festival, Carinthian Festival in Austria, Prades Music Festival in France and Zell an der Pram Chamber Music Festival in Austria, to name a few.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra - Beethoven Triple Concerto" concerts will be staged at 8pm on May 24 (Friday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall, and 8pm on May 25 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre. Tickets priced from $80 to $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit telephone card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
