SLW on container terminal labour dispute
****************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on the container terminal labour dispute today (April 20):

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: We have been continuing our efforts to conciliate and hope to resolve this labour dispute.  But of course, the decision of one of the contractors, Global Services (Global Stevedoring Serv Co Ltd) to cease business at the end of June has added difficulties and uncertainties to the conciliation process.  Despite this, we will continue to do our best to conciliate and to bring various parties back to the negotiation table.  I think it is important for all parties to set aside pre-conditions.  It is important for them to really meet each other across the table to talk frankly, talk pragmatically, so as to arrive at a consensus.
