Correctional officers intercept smuggling of suspected dangerous drugs into reception centre

     Correctional Services Officers seized a quantity of suspected dangerous drugs from a remand inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre in the past two days.

     Upon his admission on April 16, the 51-year-old male remand inmate was checked with an X-ray body scanner and was suspected to have swallowed dangerous drugs.

     At about 10.20am yesterday and 10.30am today, the inmate discharged a total of five small packs of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped with plastic sheet.

     The case was reported to the Police for investigation.

     The 51-year-old inmate was remanded for the offence of possession of dangerous drugs.

     A spokesperson for the department said, "The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline in a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 33 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most of the seizures were made in reception centres.
