****************************************************

Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (April 16).  Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

A total of 320 verbal warnings and 1 263 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from April 10 to 16.

During the period, Police issued 1 032 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 154 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway and 31 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed over 11 800 publicity leaflets at 298 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
