Man jailed for conspiracy to use false instrument
*************************************************

A 39-year-old foreign male was sentenced to 40 months' imprisonment for conspiracy to use a false instrument at District Court today (April 15).

The Court heard that Commercial Crime Bureau officers conducted a protracted operation into an overseas syndicate engaged in the use of counterfeit credit cards and made the arrest in Wong Tai Sin on October 31 last year with a seizure of six counterfeit credit cards. Investigations revealed that the defendant attempted to use counterfeit credit cards to make fraudulent purchases from various shops in Kowloon and succeeded to purchase food and cash vouchers worth about $1,200 in total.

The defendant was subsequently charged with two counts of conspiracy to use a false instrument. The sentence was handed down today after he pleaded guilty to the two charges.

Members of public are reminded to keep their credit cards properly and stay vigilant when using their credit cards, both locally and abroad, to protect the data.
