"The Four Key Industries and Other Selected Industries in the Hong Kong Economy"

The Government has been actively pursuing economic development in order to keep up the competitive advantage of Hong Kong. The traditional four key industries in Hong Kong, including financial services, trading and logistics, tourism, and professional and producer services, have been the driving force of Hong Kong's economic growth, providing impetus to growth of other sectors and creating employment. Besides, selected emerging industries, including cultural and creative industries, medical services, education services, innovation and technology, testing and certification services, and environmental industries, have also been identified as enjoying advantages for further development.

Feature articles analysing the economic contribution and employment situation in respect of the four key industries and selected emerging industries in 2010 were published in the February and March 2012 issues of HKMDS respectively. This feature article is an updated version of the two feature articles published in 2012, with figures for 2011 incorporated.

It also attempts to gauge the more recent business performance of the retail trade and food services sectors with reference to the results of related monthly and quarterly surveys in 2012.

"Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2011"

The socio-economic ties between Hong Kong, the mainland of China and Macau are growing stronger, leading to tremendous growth in cross-boundary travel over the years. This feature article briefly describes the characteristics of cross-boundary trips and trip makers, based on data obtained from the Cross-boundary Travel Survey conducted by the Planning Department during October to November 2011.
