Tree planting event to promote green Lantau (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Islands District Council:

     More than 300 residents, students, teachers and volunteers from Islands District planted 2 200 native seedlings at the "Islands District Healthy City Tree Planting Festival - Green Lantau 2013" activity co-hosted by the Islands District Council (IDC) and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department on Nei Lak Shan, Lantau Island, today (April 13).

     Participants were offered a free ride on the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping Village, from which they hiked to the planting site on Nei Lak Shan. Apart from taking part in the greening activity, they also enjoyed the picturesque scenery of Tung Chung and Ngong Ping.

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing; the District Officer (Islands), Mr Anthony Li; the Chairman of the Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries and Environmental Hygiene Committee of the IDC, Ms Lee Kwai-chun; the Assistant Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation (Country and Marine Parks), Mr Joseph Sham; the Managing Director of Ngong Ping 360 Limited, Mr Wilson Shao; the Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association, Mr Ken So; the Senior Operations Manager (East & West Region) of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Mr Ma Chun-fai; the Senior Manager, Public Affairs of the Airport Authority Hong Kong, Mr Siu Kam-hang; the General Manager (Corporate Development) of Power Assets Holdings Limited, Mr Yee Tak-chow; and the Volunteer Ambassador of Sino Group, Miss Irene Lo, officiated at the event.

     This is the fourth consecutive year that the Islands Healthy City Working Group under the Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries and Environmental Hygiene Committee of the IDC has held a tree planting event on Nei Lak Shan. It aims to enhance the ecological environment and biodiversity of the nearby areas, as well as increase public awareness of environmental protection and encourage participation in greening work.

     The event was co-organised by the Islands District Office, the Conservancy Association and Ngong Ping 360 Limited, and sponsored by Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Hong Kong International Airport, Power Assets Holdings Limited and Sino Group.
