Topping-out ceremony for new hospital block at Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, officiated at the topping-out ceremony for Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) Wai Ming Block (New Ambulatory and Rehabilitation Block) this afternoon (April 11). The CMC redevelopment project comprises a new ambulatory/rehabilitation block with a construction floor area of 54,500 square metres and the provision of a rehabilitation garden to cope with the increasing demand for healthcare services in the district.
 
     The Chief Executive was accompanied by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man; Hospital Authority Chairman, Mr Anthony Wu; Hospital Authority Chief Executive, Dr Leung Pak-yin; Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, the Reverend Michael Yeung; Chairman of CMC Hospital Governing Committee, Professor David Cheung; Sham Shui Po District Council Chairman, Mr Kwok Chun-wah; Kowloon West Cluster Chief Executive, Dr Nancy Tung; and CMC Hospital Chief Executive, Dr Ma Hok-cheung.

     In his welcoming address, the Hospital Authority Chairman, Mr Anthony Wu, said, "The Wai Ming Block mainly provides ambulatory and rehabilitation services, which will effectively sooth the need for acute hospitalisation. This is in line with the direction of developing modernised healthcare services. The new block provides ample space and a comfortable environment which will enhance treatment progress for patients undergoing rehabilitation. With additional resources at CMC, overall healthcare services for the district will be further enhanced to benefit the residents of Sham Shui Po District."

     The CMC Hospital Governing Committee Chairman, Professor David Cheung, thanked the Food and Health Bureau, the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Caritas Hong Kong, Sham Shui Po District Council for their full support, as well as the charity donations from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Kadoorie Charitable Foundation and all other donors. There was also a dedication to CMC staff and the public for their benevolence and understanding.

     At the ceremony, the Reverend Michael Yeung gave a blessing to the redeveloped Wai Ming Block.

     Caritas Medical Centre opened in 1964. To cope with the ever-rising aging and growing population the Phase 1 Redevelopment Project was completed in 2002. The Finance Committee of the Legislative Council approved funding of HK$1,719.6 million for the Phase 2 Redevelopment Project in 2007. The whole project will be completed in 2014.
