Chief Executive expresses condolences on death of Baroness Thatcher
***********************************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (April 9) sent the following condolence message to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom, Mr William Hague, on the death of Baroness Thatcher:

"On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the people of Hong Kong, I extend my deepest condolences to the people of Britain on the death of Baroness Thatcher. In particular, we extend our sympathies to her family.

Baroness Thatcher will be remembered as the British Prime Minister whose signature appears on the Sino-British Joint Declaration signed in Beijing in December 1984. This agreement marked the beginning of Hong Kong's transition and return to China in 1997, when the principle of 'One Country, Two Systems' in Hong Kong was successfully implemented.

Once again, our deepest sympathies on the death of Baroness Thatcher. May she rest in peace."
