Uruguayan black light theatre company to perform "KOHI" in May
***********************************************************

Pampinak Theatre from Uruguay will stage two black light theatre performances, entitled "KOHI", in May.

In the theatre production, Kone Matrak is a presenter and collector of show fragments. He has travelled around the world watching shows, and these are his favourite ones: "Liu and the Water", about a boy who played with his own reflection on the water; "Onak and His Pet", about an acrobat with his strange pet; "Lejla", about a ballet dancer with her dragon; and "KOHI and the Giant Garden Seed", about a gardener clown chasing a flying seed.

Pampinak Theatre is a puppet theatre company using black light theatre as the main staging technique. The puppets used are made by members of the company through experimentation, with an emphasis on creating natural movements with mechanisms of their own design. In adopting a mixture of black light theatre and the Japanese bunraku for staging, the company tells stories that entertain and at the same time tug at the heart. The language used is a universal one, easily understood by people of all ages, regardless of background and race. By stimulating the human capacity for surprise, love of beautiful things, laughter and music, the company is able to turn a theatre spectacle into a life experience.

"KOHI" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). It will be held at 8pm on May 18 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of North District Town Hall and 8pm on May 19 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tai Po Civic Centre. Tickets ranging from $120 to $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package.

In addition, the LCSD will organise two glow puppetry black light theatre workshops (conducted in English with Cantonese interpretation) to tie in with the performances. Pampinak Theatre members will introduce black light theatre and demonstrate the manipulation of the puppets. There will also be an interactive Q&A session. The workshops are suitable for people aged 3 or above and will be held at 3pm and 8pm on May 17 (Friday) at the Cultural Activities Hall of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $80 for each workshop are available at URBTIX outlets.
