Glass action paves way to greener HK
************************************

About 250 tonnes of empty glass bottles are disposed of at landfills every day in Hong Kong - roughly equivalent to half a million 750ml bottles. Glass does not naturally decompose, and our landfills are almost at capacity.

To reduce glass waste, the Government now supports five glass-recycling programmes, including one operated by the Hong Chi Association, employing about 100 people with intellectual disabilities to collect glass bottles from about 160 collection points.

Recycled glass bottles can be crushed into glass sand, as a substitute for river sand, to produce environmentally friendly paving blocks. The creative industry is also eyeing recycled glass, which can be transformed into creative artworks.

A feature story that introduces local glass recycling efforts appears in both video and text formats on news.gov.hk today (April 7).
