Hong Kong Customs yesterday (April 3) foiled a drug trafficking attempt by a passenger at Hong Kong International Airport and seized 8.4 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $8.71 million. A 46-year-old man was arrested.
Customs officers yesterday afternoon intercepted a passenger arriving from São Paulo, Brazil, at the arrival hall of the airport. The officers found the cocaine soaked in the linings of two jackets and two quilts in the passenger's checked suitcase.
The arrested person, who claimed to be a security guard, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (April 5).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
