Design students' rags-to-riches story
*************************************

Every day in Hong Kong, around 200 tonnes of textile waste - last season's fabric sample books and leftover cloth - are dumped into the city's overflowing landfills.

Hong Kong Design Institute students are putting these "rags" to good use, collecting them from factories that discard them, working with the disadvantaged to manufacture the products they design, and selling them through social enterprises to donate the profits to charity.

Design students Toby Yan and Becky Sin describe how this project has helped them understand that seemingly useless products can in fact be quite useful. More importantly, it has brought the realisation that people assumed to be incapable can be talented with a strong work ethic.

The story appears today (April 1) on news.gov.hk in both text and video formats.
