Spanish guitar maestro Pepe Romero to perform in June

     World-renowned classical and flamenco guitar maestro Pepe Romero will perform an all-Spanish recital programme titled "Songs My Father Taught Me" in June.

     One of the most celebrated and versatile musicians of his generation, Spanish-born guitarist Pepe Romero has enjoyed an illustrious career and is particularly well known for his dazzling virtuosity, compelling interpretations and flawless technique on the instrument. Together with his father, the legendary Celedonio Romero, and his brothers Celin and Angel, Pepe formed the Romeros Quartet - dubbed the "Royal Family of the Guitar" ¡V often referred to as the world's leading guitar ensemble.

     Pepe has appeared as a soloist with the world's greatest orchestras and in collaboration with the most celebrated conductors and composers. Since his first recording, "Flamenco Fenómeno!", released when he was only 15, Pepe has made more than 50 recordings.

     Among other honours, Pepe has been knighted into the Order of Isabel la Católica and awarded honorary doctorates in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of Victoria. Pepe is also a passionate advocate of the traditional flamenco music of his native Andalusia and has been awarded the Premio Andalucia de Música, the highest recognition given by his province for contributions to the arts. In 2007, the Romeros received the President's Merit Award from the Recording Academy, producers of the Grammy Awards, for their significant contributions to music and their professional career achievements.

     In 2012-2013, Pepe is honouring the 100th anniversary of his father's birth, the legendary Celedonio Romero, and in the coming season will tour the world celebrating his own 70th year.

     "Encore Series - Guitar Recital by Pepe Romero" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will take place at 8pm, June 16 (Sunday), at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $150, $200, $250 and $300 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 10 per cent is offered for Great Music booking package. Please refer to the programme leaflets for details.

     A pre-concert talk by music educator Tina Karen Lo will be held at 6.45pm on June 16 (Sunday) in the North Committee Room, 7/F, High Block, Hong Kong City Hall. Conducted in Cantonese, the talk will be free on a first-come, first-served basis.

     Other programmes in the Great Music series include "Encore Series - An Evening with Renée Fleming" on May 9 (Thursday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and "Academy of Ancient Music" on June 23 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall.
