Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Horqin Ensemble of Inner Mongolia will perform two concerts of ethnic Mongolian music in April.
The concerts will feature traditional Mongolian musical instruments rarely seen in Hong Kong including the morin kuur and the haobishi. The programme includes the utin duu (long song) "The Cool Peaks", the khoomi (throat singing) "A Ritual Song", the Horqin folksongs "Dongshan My Love" and "The Pearl on the Green Grassland", the morin kuur pieces "Black Steed" and "Yurol - A Toasting Song", the Mongolian folksong "My Homeland" and the new work "Homecoming".
The Horqin Ensemble of Inner Mongolia is made up of ethnic Mongolians who were born and raised in nomad families on the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. They learned to play traditional local instruments such as the morin kuur (horsehead fiddle) from their parents or folk artists when they were young, and later enrolled in professional music institutes where they received formal training. Upon graduation, they played in various professional performing arts troupes of Inner Mongolia before forming the ensemble. Each member is able to play bowed-string and plucked-string instruments as well as perform the unique Mongolian "throat singing" style known as khoomi. They have performed on CCTV gala shows and events in the Mainland and abroad, and have won many awards. Part of a new generation of Mongolian performers, they exhibit musical originality, robustness and an expansive style associated with the vast grasslands they call home.
