Political Assistants appointed

     The Chief Executive's Office announced today (March 15) that the Appointment Committee has appointed two Political Assistants of the fourth term of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development and the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury have recommended Dr Bernard Chan Pak-li and Mr Philip Chiu Pit-lap to be their respective Political Assistants. The Appointment Committee has approved the recommendations. Dr Chan and Mr Chiu will take up office on March 20 and March 18 respectively.

     The Government will make further announcements on the Under Secretaries and Political Assistants for the remaining bureaux in due course.

     Following are the biographical notes on the new appointees:

Dr Bernard Chan Pak-li

     Aged 36, Dr Chan holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, USA.

     Before joining the Government, Dr Chan spent the last decade working in the technology sector, gaining much experience in early stage research, technology development, intellectual property management and product commercialisation.

     From 2008, Dr Chan served as a member of the Kwun Tong District Council, gaining valuable public administration and community service experience.

Mr Philip Chiu Pit-lap

     Aged 35, Mr Chiu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, and a Master of Science in Economic and Social History from Oxford University. Based in New York and then Hong Kong, Mr Chiu was responsible for fund management and derivatives sales at various financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bear Stearns, JP Morgan and Standard Chartered Bank.
