Cluster of Influenza A cases at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) made the following announcement today (March 14):

     Three patients (aged 56 to 73) and two staff members in a male psychiatric ward of PYNEH presented with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection since March 9.  Appropriate viral tests were arranged and the test results of two patients were positive to Influenza A (H1). The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition. Of the two staff members, one is now on sick leave while the other has resumed duty.

     Admission and visiting to the ward have been suspended and restricted discharge from the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients and staff members in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
