***********************************************************

The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, today (March 13) visited a public rental housing (PRH) construction site in Kwai Chung to keep abreast of the progress of public housing developments in the district.

Situated in Tai Pak Tin Street, Kwai Chung Area 9H, the PRH site consists of a 41-storey domestic block sitting on top of a podium. The project is anticipated to complete in the third quarter of 2013, providing a total of 839 PRH flats for a population of about 2 290.

During the visit, Professor Cheung noted that in order to create a healthy living environment, the project has been planned and designed with the best use of natural lighting and ventilation, as well as with a green coverage of about 20 per cent of the total site area.

Moreover, the project will provide a variety of amenities including a covered multi-purpose sports hall, a podium garden, health exercise facilities for all ages and children's play areas. To facilitate convenient access for local residents, two footbridges linking On Yam Estate and Shek Lei Estate will be built at the development.

Before inspecting the site, Professor Cheung visited On Yam Estate where he had a tea gathering with members of the Estate Management Advisory Committee to listen to their views on estate management. Comprising eight domestic blocks, On Yam Estate provides 5 420 PRH flats for a population of about 16 100.

Professor Cheung also visited an elderly centre in On Yam Estate, where he chatted with elderly residents and toured the centre's services and activities.
