Concerts by Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra to rekindle memories of old Hong Kong
*******************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present three concerts by the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra in April. The concerts will feature the theme "The history of Hong Kong", and talented classical musicians including principal conductor Ho Man-chuen, conductor Wai Sing-fat and the Spring Melody Chorus will perform.

The enriching programme includes a series of Hong Kong-related songs, glove puppetry and a slideshow of precious old photos and clips that bring back memories of the Pearl of the Orient. Works to be performed include "The Green Island Serenade", "Lover's Tears", "The Story of a Small Town", "A Candle's Fire" and "Below the Lion Rock".

The Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra was founded in 1979. Apart from giving regular concerts in Hong Kong, it has been invited to perform in Macau, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, Sichuan and Zhejiang in the Mainland, Malaysia, Australia, and elsewhere. It has also participated in concerts organised by the LCSD for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Hong Kong 2009 East Asia Games. The orchestra has released many recordings on cassette and CD, including the Golden Disc Award-winning "Fishermen's Song of the East Sea".

Principal conductor Ho Man-chuen is a renowned music educator and conductor. Ho joined the Music Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in 1980 and served as an Assistant Music Officer and a Music Officer. During his tenure, he nurtured numerous young musicians. Ho is currently appointed as a visiting lecturer of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is the resident conductor of its Chinese Orchestra. He is also the Artistic Director of the Windpipe Chinese Ensemble and the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra.

Conductor Wai Sing-fat was introduced to conducting on a conducting course organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and was taught by Miran Kojian in 1984. He has conducted many orchestras, and even founded the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra in 1979 with a group of young musicians. Wai also conducted the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra in a CD recording produced and distributed by BMG that won a Golden Disc Award in 1992. When the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra was organising the first concert in the 1997 Reunification Music Festival, Wai was elected to be the conductor and the chairman of the organising committee of the combined orchestra.

The Spring Melody Chorus was formed in 1995. The group has been performing with famous musicians in Hong Kong and around the world, such as pianists Pami Petteri Karvonen, Chen Reuibin, Raymond Young and Liu Shi-kun; violinist Lu Siqing; vocalists Zhang Qiulin and Wang Xia; dongxiao recitalist Tam Po-shek; viola player Pak Ming; erhu recitalists Wong On-yuen and Hsin Hsiao-hung; Hong Kong actors Eric Tsang and Adam Cheng; composer James Wong; the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra; the Orchestra of the National Taiwan University of the Arts; and the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra.
