Territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving
***********************************************

Police yesterday (March 5) have concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

This was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police using publicity, education and enforcement to target moving traffic offences.

Conducted between February 27 and March 5, the campaign resulted in the issue of 36 verbal warnings, 295 summonses, 3 285 fixed penalty tickets and the arrest of one driver for drink driving offences.

Among the 3 580 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 1 168 were issued for speeding, 359 for mobile phone offences, 219 for seatbelt offence and 180 for failing to comply with traffic light signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited over 254 locations throughout the territory and distributed over 16 000 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles, goods vehicles and members of the public.

Members of the public are encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police. Public light bus (PLB) passengers are encouraged to report improper driving behaviour of PLB drivers to the Project Safe-Ride hotline 2754 7668.

"The campaign is aimed at enhancing the public's awareness of road safety and to reduce traffic accidents", a Police spokesman said.
