The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will perform music to accompany dance in two upcoming concerts in March entitled "Waltz Meets Tango".
The concerts will be staged at 8pm on March 30 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, and at 3.30pm on March 31 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall. Music director Dr Yip Wai-hong, principal guest conductor Jimmy Chiang, violin soloist Kitty Cheung and the Contrast Trio (comprising violinist Cheung alongside Timothy Sun on saxophone and Jenny Ng on piano), as well as tango dancers Felipe Hsieh and Sandra Mok, are also taking part in the performance of Waltz and Tango.
Among the works in the programme are Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Flowers" and "Valse-scherzo in C", Kreisler's "Three Old Viennese Waltzes", Johann Strauss's "Voices of Spring Waltz" and Piazzolla's "Four Seasons", "Oblivion" and "Libertango". Music lovers can expect the musicians to deliver stunning performances of these renowned musical works.
Music director Dr Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator. He served Hong Kong Baptist University as its Head of Music and Fine Arts Department for almost 30 years. He founded the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Children's Choir, the Yip's Children's Choir and the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra with an aim of nourishing young talent in Hong Kong.
Principal guest conductor Jimmy Chiang received his main musical training in the United Kingdom (UK) (obtaining a fellowship diploma from Trinity College London), the United States (US) (Bachelor of Music) and Vienna, Austria (Magister Artium). Since winning the First Prize of the renowned International Competition for Young Conductors Lovro von Matacic in 2007, Chiang's conducting career has gained tremendous international attention.
Violin soloist Kitty Cheung holds Master of Music and Master in Music Performance (Guildhall Artist) degrees with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music in the US. Cheung is currently the Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. She has performed in over 25 countries around the world. Cheung is also a founding member of the Contrast Trio, the only professional violin, saxophone and piano trio in Hong Kong.
The Contrast Trio was founded in 2007 in London by violinist Cheung and fellow young musicians Timothy Sun (saxophone) and Jenny Ng (piano) with the intention of giving audiences a fresh experience in music and pushing the boundaries of traditional chamber music. In addition to performing lesser-known pieces, the Contrast Trio is dedicated to premiering and promoting music by living composers including renowned local composer Alfred Wong and English composer David Wallace. The trio has performed in the UK, Hong Kong and Macau.
Felipe Hsieh and Sandra Mok are Hong Kong's first and only pair of full-time teachers and dancers of Argentine tango. Their performances are always improvised and are infused with elegance, energy and emotion. In the past 10 years they have been invited to dance or teach in Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing and Sydney.
"Waltz Meets Tango" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
