Man arrested in connection with fraudulent press release on Internet

     Police yesterday (February 14) arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the circulation of a fraudulent press release on the Internet.

     Police received referral from Government department on February 8 that a fraudulent Government press release on measures to address the overheated property market was circulated on the Internet.
 
     Officers of Technology Crime Division of Commercial Crime Bureau launched the investigation and arrested the 32-year-old man in Happy Valley yesterday for "Access to computer with criminal or dishonest Intent". Two sets of computer and one mobile phone were also seized for further examination. He has been released on Police bail pending further enquiries. Police investigation is still on-going.

     Police remind members of the public that sending malicious and fraudulent message on the Internet not only attracts civil liability, it is also likely to commit an offence of "Access to computer with criminal or dishonest intent" under the Crimes Ordinance, which is liable for maximum of five years imprisonment.
 
     Police also appeal to the public to use the Internet lawfully and not to send malicious and fraudulent messages.
