Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped a female inmate slashing her left wrist with a plastic fragment inside a cell of Lo Wu Correctional Institution at about 11am today (February 14).
Having sustained minor injuries and conscious at the time, the inmate was immediately given examination and treatment at the institution's hospital. She was later sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.
A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."
The female was serving an 18-month sentence for burglary.
