*******************************************************

Creative writing not only enhances language proficiency but also lets participants explore new visions. The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department constantly organises various activities to promote literary writing. The Competition on Story Writing in Chinese for Students in 2013 and the 23rd Chinese Poetry Writing Competition are now open for entries, with closing dates on March 13 and April 17 respectively. The postmark date will be referred to for entries sent by post.

The Competition on Story Writing in Chinese for Students has been held since 1995 to promote students' interest in creative writing and enhance their language proficiency. This year's competition consists of three categories: upper primary (primary 4 to 6), junior secondary (secondary 1 to 3) and senior secondary (secondary 4 to 6). Applicants are free to write stories in any subject. First, second and third prizes and also five merit prizes will be awarded in each of the categories. Book coupons of $2,500, $2,000 and $1,500 will be awarded to the winners of first, second and third prizes respectively, while each merit prize winner will be awarded a book coupon of $1,000. The adjudicators consist of representatives from the education profession and renowned writers. Competition results will be announced in late June 2013.

Three tie-in workshops will also be held at the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library on February 23 and February 24, with professionals in education and well-known writers sharing their writing experiences. Phone reservation is available on or before February 21. For enquiries on the Competition on Story Writing in Chinese for Students in 2013 and the workshops, please call 2928 4601 or visit the website at www.hkpl.gov.hk/storywriting.

The Chinese Poetry Writing Competition was launched in 1991 to promote proficiency in Chinese language and appreciation of rhyming Chinese literature. This year's competition consists of a student category and an open category. Each applicant may submit more than one entry. The adjudicators include Professor Ho Man-wui, Professor Chow Sik-fuk, Professor Chan Chi-ching, Professor Wong Kwan-io and Professor Lau Wai-lam. The writers of selected works in the student category will be invited to attend a meeting with adjudicators.

The first, second and third prize winners of the student category will receive cash awards of $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000 respectively, and five merit prize winners and two special prize winners will each receive cash awards of $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. For the open category, the first, second and third prize winners will receive cash awards of $7,000, $5,000 and $4,000 respectively, while five merit prize winners and two special prize winners will each receive cash awards of $2,500 and $1,500 respectively. The competition results will be announced in September 2013.

Speakers will introduce features, use of rhythm and writing skills in Chinese poetry.
