HK YWCA Chinese Orchestra to stage concerts with Chinese zodiac theme
*********************************************************

The Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will combine music and puppetry for three concerts in March.

Under the batons of Chan Chiu-yin and Ling Cho-ho, the orchestra will perform works to go with the theme of the Chinese zodiac. Works to be performed include "Dance of the Golden Snake", "Mary Has a Little Lamb", "Feeding Chickens", "Hamsters' Spring Party" (Hong Kong premiere), "Piggy Capriccio", "The Dragon Boat Race" and excerpts from "Animal Suite". Shadow play and traditional puppetry by the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center will complement the repertoire.

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is one of the oldest Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. The orchestra is dedicated to introducing a wide range of Chinese folk music to the public, as well as providing training and performance opportunities to local young musicians. The orchestra has collaborated with an array of conductors and musicians, and its performances have received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Established in 2001, the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center strives to stage performances that are both creative and professional. The group has been active in many areas, from Chinese traditional theatre performance to theatre education, community projects on traditional theatre, and drama culture. It has gone on tour with its puppet shows in many countries and regions, including participating in international puppetry festivals, and has taken part in cultural exchanges and exhibitions on puppetry and shadow play. It won the Special Award at the All China Golden Lion Award Competition for Puppetry and Shadow Play in 2003.

The concerts by the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. They will be held at 8pm on March 9 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tai Po Civic Centre, 8pm on March 16 (Saturday) at the Theatre of Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre and 8pm on March 23 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
