Theatre production draws inspiration from life and works of poet Dai Wangshu
************************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s "Footprints of Time - Literary Figures and Their Sojourn in Hong Kong" Series will present "A Poet in the Rainy Lane" in March. The production is inspired by the life and works of renowned Chinese poet Dai Wangshu.

The theatre performance is supported by a strong team, including playwright Mandu, director Wu Hoi-fai, set and costume designer Yuen Hon-wai, lighting designer Mousey Tse, creator of original music and sound designer Leung Po-wing and choreographer Ivy Tsui, as well as performers So Yuk-fai, Cheng Ka-chun, Yip Hing-wah and Tam Tsz-ling.

Dai Wangshu emerged as an accomplished poet in modern China at the young age of 23 with his immensely popular poem "The Rainy Lane". He subsequently studied in overseas and this experience greatly broadened his horizons. His literary output continued to be well received, but his private life was tumultuous. During World War II, he came to stay in Hong Kong and was jailed for several months by the Japanese army. After being tortured in prison, his health became worse and his artistic style changed dramatically. Ironically, after the war, he was accused of treason.

Weaving together the life and works of this distinguished poet in the nostalgic atmosphere of the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, this production is a reflection upon the dilemmas of a member of the intelligentsia in modern China.

"A Poet in the Rainy Lane" (performed in Cantonese) will be staged at 8.15pm on March 16 to 25 at the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. Tickets priced at $160 (free seating) are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking.
