Climate change is widely acknowledged as one of the most serious challenges facing mankind and ecology in this century. Australia's Great Barrier Reef, for example, has lost more than half of its coral cover in the past 27 years, and the increase in water temperature is reducing the amount of oxygen in the oceans, causing marine fish to become smaller. If countries around the world do not work to take effective measures to combat climate change, possible losses due to climate change are expected to increase rapidly, reaching 6 million deaths. The crisis may also affect the global economy.
The Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has organised a talk entitled "The Crisis of Global Climate Change" to be held at 3pm on February 24 (Sunday) at the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library. The Chief Executive Officer of the World Green Organisation, Dr William Yu, will give an overview of global climate change and how it poses pressing threats to mankind and ecology, and will also discuss its impact in Hong Kong. The talk will be conducted in Cantonese with free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dr Yu currently sits on the Energy Advisory Committee and the Environmental Campaign Committee under the Environment Bureau and the Waste Recovery Projects Vetting Sub-committee under the Environment and Conservation Fund. He also belongs to the stakeholder advisory panel at the World Resources Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the City University of Hong Kong.
Having completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK, Dr Yu has not only participated in policy advocacy strategies and research and written articles on environmental policy for newspapers, but has also acted as a referee for several energy journals. He is also a member of the Expert Panel on Industry Standards and Research under the Hong Kong Green Building Council and sits on the Project Management Committee, which oversees the CarbonSmart Programme.
