Estate Cleaning to Greet Chinese New Year (with photos)
*******************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

A territory-wide "Year-end Cleaning Campaign in Public Housing Estates" was launched today (January 26) to greet the Lunar New Year. Public housing tenants were encouraged to participate in the cleaning operations in their estates to help maintain estate cleanliness and to provide a hygienic living environment.

Officiating at the kick-off ceremony at the Domain, the Director of Housing, Mr D W Pescod, said that the Housing Department will step up cleaning of common areas in public housing estates and organise "Operation Tai Ping Tei" during the two weeks preceding Lunar New Year. He called on public housing residents to join in the efforts by thoroughly cleaning their own homes.

To encourage residents to adopt hygienic practices at home, the Housing Department has recruited 260 tenants as Estate Cleaning Ambassadors to boost the awareness among family members, neighbours and friends.

"With the concerted effort and collaboration of estate staff, cleansing contractors and our residents, we could cultivate and sustain the quality and healthy living environment in public housing estates," said Mr Pescod.

At today's ceremony, Mr Pescod commended the ambassadors for their contributions and presented symbolic pins to the ambassadors' representatives in recognition of their work. He also demonstrated together with TV stars useful tips on household cleaning.
