******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (January 17) the January 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Salient Features of Hong Kong's External Direct Investment, 2002 to 2011", "Hong Kong Domestic Household Projections up to 2041" and "Hong Kong's Outward Processing Trade with the Mainland of China under the Arrangements of 'Processing and Assembling'" are included.

"Salient Features of Hong Kong's External Direct Investment, 2002 to 2011"

Hong Kong is an international financial centre and a regional business hub. It is also a gateway to the vast market of the mainland of China (the Mainland) as well as a platform for the Mainland enterprises to gain access to the global market. External direct investment (DI) between Hong Kong and the rest of the world, including the Mainland, is very sizable. Analysis of Hong Kong's DI statistics over the past years is useful in understanding the characteristics and trend of DI in Hong Kong.

This feature article presents salient features of Hong Kong's DI statistics in the past decade.

"Hong Kong Domestic Household Projections up to 2041"

Following the release of the new set of population projections up to 2041 in July 2012, C&SD has compiled a new set of projections on the number of domestic households and average household size up to 2041 as well as the domestic household size distribution up to 2021. This feature article gives a brief account of the projection method and presents the projection results.

"Hong Kong's Outward Processing Trade with the Mainland of China under the Arrangements of 'Processing and Assembling'"

In Hong Kong's trade with the Mainland, a crucial part of it involves outward processing (OP) activities. Within OP trade, the arrangements of "processing and assembling" (P&A) play a vital role. Having a more systematic and informed analysis of Hong Kong's trade with the Mainland involving OP, especially P&A activities, can help understand better Hong Kong's trading characteristics with the Mainland. C&SD recently started to collect additional information on this topic through the Survey on Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China.

This feature article introduces the concepts in regard to the types of arrangements for processing adopted in OP trade and summarises additional information on P&A activities collected in the period from 2010 to 2011. Readers who are interested in the overall OP activities in the Mainland may refer to the feature article entitled "Hong Kong's Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China, 2001 to 2011" published in the December 2012 issue of the HKMDS.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Electronic Trading Services Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4241).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available. Users can download the Digest free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/hkstat/sub/sp140.jsp?productCode=B1010002).

Enquiries about the contents of the Digest can be directed to the General Statistics Section of C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4738).
