Renowned local modern dancer Abby Chan has found inspiration in memories of her childhood nightmares and turned them into dance theatre for her latest work, "Kidult Ophelia". To be staged at Cattle Depot in March, the production is not purely a dance show, but a theatre work incorporating dance, theatre, video, lighting and theatre installation, creating a unique and bizarre performance.
Cattle Depot, the former Ma Tau Kok Animal Quarantine Depot, is a Grade II historic building which offers audiences a completely different experience. Working alongside Abby Chan, Mann Chan is serving as associated creator and dramaturge while the performers include Cai Ying, Frankie Ho, Steve Ng and Lokin So.
Abby Chan was trained in modern dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and was a dancer with the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company before she furthered her studies in the US. She co-founded Mcmuimui Dansemble with Yeung Wai-mei in 1998, and the female dance duo is noted for presenting genuinely local sentiments with a distinctive style. Apart from being presented in Hong Kong, her choreography has been shown in New York, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Taiwan, Singapore and Brazil. Chan has received the Hong Kong Dance Award: in 2003 for her choreography in "Pipe Dream", in 2004 for her performance in "Rite of Spring", and in 2006 for the Mcmuimui Dansemble production "Love in a Doggy Bag" and the Dance Exchange project "DanceWide HK/NY". In addition to working in dance, Chan has been active in local theatre productions, broadening her experience as a performing artist. Chan founded Chan-Can-Dance Theatre in New York in 2005 and was invited to perform with many local groups, festivals and theatres. At the invitation of the city of São Paulo, Brazil, she conducted a cultural exchange programme between November 2008 and January 2009.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Kidult Ophelia" will be staged at 8pm from February 28 (Thursday) to March 2 (Saturday), and at 6.30pm on March 3 (Sunday) at Cattle Depot, To Kwa Wan. Tickets priced at $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
