The kitchen is no longer off-limits for Kuk Ho-wing. Instead, it is expanding his limits. Employed by Cook Easy, a social enterprise established by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, he and others with disabilities prepare ready-to-cook food packs for same-day delivery.
Café 330, a coffee shop inside the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, is another social enterprise. Operated by the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and staffed by people recovering from mental illness, the shop serves nutritious food and drinks, hoping both customers and staff will gain a healthy body, mind and spirit.
Both social enterprises were sponsored by the Social Welfare Department, with funding from its "Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities Through Small Enterprise" project. Launched in 2001, it has provided more than $54 million in grants to subsidise 76 projects and create more than 580 job opportunities for people with disabilities, helping them develop their potential and become self-reliant.
