********************************************************

The Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2013 is now on sale.

The year 2013 marks the 130th anniversary of the Hong Kong Observatory. Over the years, the Observatory has strived to provide quality weather services utilising state-of-the-art technologies. The Calendar illustrates the efforts taken proactively by the Observatory to develop weather information services for various community sectors and to make use of new information channels in its dissemination, with an aim to reach out to more members of the public, particularly the younger generation.  This also aligns with the 2013 World Meteorological Day theme, "Weather and climate: engaging the youth".

The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Shun Chi-ming, wrote in the preface, "Through the increasingly popular and convenient platforms of the new media, the Observatory wishes to connect with more young people to promote their understanding on inclement weather and climate change. In doing so, it is hoped that they will take positive steps to face the future challenges of weather and climate. I sincerely hope that the messages conveyed in this calendar can arouse your interest in weather and climate."

The calendar contains useful climatological and astronomical information, including climatological normals, an annual climatological summary, monthly climatological data and special climatological events, the times for the rising and setting of the sun and the moon, dates of eclipses of the sun and the moon, and tidal information. Also listed are Hong Kong Observatory telephone numbers and websites with QR codes for accessing the weather and geophysical information.

At $60 a copy, the calendar is an excellent New Year gift for friends and relatives.  It is on sale at the Observatory's Resource Centre and the Publications Sales Unit of the Information Services Department. The calendar is also available through the online Government Bookstore at www.bookstore.gov.hk.
