*******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (December 17) the December 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, four feature articles entitled "Analysis of Low Income Households not Receiving Comprehensive Social Security Assistance", "Hong Kong's Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China, 2001 to 2011", "The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2011" and "Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2012 to 2041" are included.

"Analysis of Low Income Households not Receiving Comprehensive Social Security Assistance"

The Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) Scheme provides a safety net for individuals or families who cannot support themselves financially. Nevertheless, there were still a number of low income households not receiving CSSA (non-CSSA low income households) in Hong Kong.

This feature article provides an analysis of non-CSSA low income households based on the data obtained from the General Household Survey.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the General Household Survey Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2887 5506).

"Hong Kong's Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China, 2001 to 2011"

Outward processing activities play an important role in Hong Kong's trade with the mainland of China (the Mainland). According to the findings of the Survey on Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China conducted by C&SD, the proportions of Hong Kong's trade with the Mainland involving outward processing activities remained significant in 2011, ranging from 15% in domestic exports to the Mainland to 73% in re-exports of the Mainland origin to other places.

Feature articles addressing this subject have been published in this Digest regularly since 1995. This feature article describes Hong Kong's trade involving outward processing in the Mainland during the period from 2001 to 2011.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Trade Surveys and Research Section, C&SD (Tel. : 2582 5255).

"The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2011"

Although the age-sex specific mortality rates for both genders and all age groups have been continuously decreasing, the overall mortality rates and the number of deaths in Hong Kong showed an increasing trend because of population ageing. This feature article gives a brief account of the mortality trend in Hong Kong over the period from 1981 to 2011.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Demographic Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2716 8044).

"Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2012 to 2041"

C&SD has compiled a new set of labour force projections covering the period 2012 to 2041. This new set of projections is compiled using the newly released results of the 2011-based population projections as the benchmark. The projections provide information on the projected labour supply in Hong Kong and its age and sex distribution during 2012 to 2041. This feature article gives a brief account of the projection method and presents the projection results.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the General Household Survey Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2887 5506).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; public accounts, money and finance; and transport, communications and tourism.
