Fifth support service centre for ethnic minorities commences operation
************************************************************

A support service centre for ethnic minorities in Yau Tsim Mong (YTM) district and a sub-centre in Sham Shui Po (SSP), both operated under the funding grant of the Home Affairs Department (HAD), commenced operation today (December 11).

The centre and the sub-centre will provide a wide range of support services for ethnic minorities with a view to further facilitating their early integration into the community.

The support services include Cantonese and English language classes, after-school tutorial classes, computer classes, visit programmes, interest classes, counselling and social activities. The two centres will also provide other services to assist ethnic minorities in accessing public services, including Internet access and  distribution of multi-lingual service guidebooks and leaflets on services provided by government and non-governmental organisations.

The YTM main centre is located at Shop B, G/F and 1/F, Sun Wah Building, 73 Battery Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon. The associated SSP sub-centre is located at Shop A, G/F, 286-300 Cheung Sha Wan Road, South Ocean Building, Sham Shui Po. Both centres operate six days a week including Sundays, except for public holidays. The operating hours are from 9am to 9pm. The centre and the sub-centre close on Mondays and Wednesdays respectively.

At present, the HAD provides grants for four non-governmental organisations to operate four centres for ethnic minorities, respectively located in Wan Chai, Kwun Tong, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun, providing a series of support services to help them integrate into the community.

To strengthen the support services, following an open invitation of proposal exercise, the HAD has granted funds for two additional non-governmental organisations, namely the New Home Association and the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, to establish and operate an additional main centre in YTM district and associated sub-centres in SSP and Tung Chung respectively. The main centre and the two sub-centres will be fully operational within this month.
